Forgive Without Restraint

Should others bring shame upon your name, even though you have committed no wrong, forgive them. For as God has forgiven us, we ought to forgive others. Should others mistreat you and gossip about you, forgive them. God forgave you.

“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

(Matthew 6:14-15)

Should others bring charges against you, saying evil things about you and spreading lies to cause you harm, be ready to declare the hope that lives within you. Proclaim Jesus and forgive them, for they do not know what they do.

Should someone hurt you in anger, giving the devil a door to work through, fear not! God will keep you and comfort you in your time of need. He will never let you go, for He has forgiven you your sins, as you should so do to them who sin against you.

Should you feel anger against another, wanting to take vengeance for a wrong done to you, repent and forgive them. God knows you and loves you and has forgiven you. Justice is His. Forgive without restraint.

  1. I’ve learned through the years that forgiveness is releasing my right to punish others who have hurt me.

It’s not about denial. It’s not about saying, “Oh, that’s OK.” And it’s not about saying that relationships are not damaged (sometime permanently) by the actions of those who hurt us.

    1. By releasing those who owe us a debt, we release ourselves of the burden of carrying bitterness and resentment, therefore abiding by God’s Word. May His peace be with you, Wayne.

  2. Forgiveness is so important. It is a reminder of what God did for us. It is a means to contain the flesh and keep emotions under control. And yet so much more. Unforgiveness causes bitterness to grow. How can we stay close to the Lord like that? Thank you, Jack.

    1. Bitterness, like a poison, destroys all that is good and will leave us dead to Christ. When we forgive, we release the other person from owing us, and in turn, we reconcile with Christ. God bless!

    1. When we forgive others, God comforts us, relieving us of the weight that sin had brought in our lives. We no longer need to think about the evil another has committed on us, but on the good God has done for us instead. Knowing this, we are free! God bless.

    1. If God forgave us first, how much more ought we to forgive one another? Knowing how gracious God is towards us, gives us joy knowing we do not have a burden to carry of all the sins we committed. In the same way, the burden of bitterness toward another is gone as well, since we no longer require a payment from those who have sinned against us. Yes, we are God’s children, born again into a new life!

  3. By God’s grace, i pray for a heart that readily forgives. God’s forgiveness of our sins opens our minds to what forgiveness really means, and how gracious God is to us, that we want to do the same to others.

  4. Amen. This is the centre of our calling. We love because He first loved us; and we forgive, as He has forgiven us. Our own sin is far greater than any sin towards us!

  5. A life without grudges and sense of revenge is so liberating, thank you for giving setting an example through your life 🙌🏻🙌🏻

  6. Excellent post, Jack. The freedom to forgive opens up our ability to move forward with God and others. It’s serves as the red domino, triggering a cascade of positive thoughts, choices, words, and actions.

    1. Amen. Forgiveness is for us, as it releases us of the burden of bitterness and hatred we might feel for another, which Jesus has shown would separate us from Him. God bless!
